I am a Registered Occupational Therapist with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and practicing Psychotherapy. I have over 13 years experience as an Occupational Therapist and am also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I possess experience working with individuals with a variety of mental health concerns throughout my career including but not limited to depression, anxiety, psychosis, brain injury and trauma.
I work from a client centered approach and I believe the client is an equal partner in the therapeutic process.
To me, health is not simply the absence of disease, it involves every aspect of your life. I believe health is being able to participate in activities which are meaningful to you, connecting with others, engaging in productive and leisure activities and establishing routines, habits and behaviours which enable growth and positivity.
I support and guide my clients to set goals and implement practical strategies, routines and mindfulness to assist with building habits in order to restore health and well being.
A free initial 15 - 30 minutes phone consultation is provided to discuss your reason for seeking counselling and to ensure our services are appropriate for your needs.
If required an Assessment will be completed prior to beginning counselling. An assessment is 60-90 minutes in length. In addition a one page summary with recommendations is completed which outlines the treatment plan proposed. For example, goals may include wellness, personal growth, healing, problem solving, adjustment to life situations or the development of coping skills.
Sessions typically range in length from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Sessions are made up of follow up from last session or if first session setting of goals. An agenda for the session will be established by the therapist and client. At the end of the session what was completed will be reviewed and goals for the next session established.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy which teaches clients to identify, challenge and change their thoughts and behaviours. CBT is structured, time limited, problem focused and goal oriented. Clients are taught the skills and strategies required to identify, evaluate and respond to dysfunctional thoughts and problematic behaviours. CBT is based on a collaborative and proactive therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client. CBT is currently available for depression and anxiety disorders including general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder and OCD.
