Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a treatment intervention that aims at assisting the client in understanding and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviour. In CBT it is believed that dysfunctional thinking influences a person's mood and behaviour. CBT is goal oriented, problem focused, time limited and requires a good therapeutic relationship emphasizing collaboration and active participation. CBT aims to teach the client the skills to identify, evaluate and respond to dysfunctional thinking independently.
Components of CBT for depression:
- Help clients solve problems.
- Behavioural activation.
- identify/respond to thoughts about their self, the world and their future.
Components of CBT for anxiety:
- Better assess risk of the situation.
- Consider and utilize internal and external resources.
- Decrease avoidance.
- Confront situations clients fear by testing negative predictions.
CBT FOR ANXIETY GROUP THERAPY
What Is CBT Group Therapy for Anxiety?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps people understand and manage anxiety by changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors.
In a group therapy format, CBT offers the added benefit of shared experience and peer support. Here's what it typically involves:
- Psychoeducation: Learn how anxiety works and how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected.
- Cognitive Restructuring: Identify and challenge negative or distorted thinking patterns.
- Behavioral Techniques: Practice strategies like exposure therapy, relaxation exercises, and problem-solving.
- Group Dynamics: Share experiences, offer encouragement, and learn from others facing similar challenges.
- Skill Building: Develop coping tools that you can use in everyday life to reduce anxiety and build confidence.
The goal isn’t to “think happy thoughts”—it’s to think realistic ones and take action that supports emotional well-being.
